Better Practice Beats More Repetition

A grounded guide to deliberate practice for athletes and active adults, explaining why structured feedback, task design, coaching context, motivation, and reinforcement matter more than repetition alone.
Most athletes understand effort. Fewer have a clear system for turning effort into skill.
Skill development is not just a matter of doing more repetitions. Deliberate practice depends on a structured loop: specific targets, repeated attempts, feedback, reflection, and adjustment. Coaching context and implementation quality shape what that practice actually teaches, which is why two athletes can complete the same drill and learn very different things from it.
That distinction matters. Repetition can build familiarity, but it can also reinforce the same timing error, decision habit, or technical compensation if nothing in the practice environment helps the athlete see and correct it.
This is not a promise of mastery. It is a way to make practice more observable. A shooter working on release consistency, a field athlete refining change-of-direction mechanics, or a team player improving communication under pressure all face the same basic problem: the body and brain need clear information about the gap between the intended action and the actual result. Without that gap being visible, more work may simply mean more activity.
Repetition only helps when it has a target
The most useful question before a practice block is not “How much are we doing?” It is “What exactly is supposed to change?”
A specific target narrows attention. Instead of practicing an entire movement or sport situation at once, the athlete isolates one controllable element: foot position before a cut, the timing of a pass, the decision cue before a shot, or the clarity of a verbal call. The target does not need to be complicated. It needs to be visible enough that the athlete or coach can tell whether the attempt matched the standard.
That is where many practice environments drift. They contain work, sweat, and repetition, but the feedback is too vague to shape behavior. “Do it better” is not a learning signal. “Your first step opened too wide, which delayed the second step” is closer to a correction. Video, scoring, coach observation, peer evaluation, or a simple performance cue can all provide useful feedback when they compare the attempt against the target.
The practical distinction is this: a drill is not deliberate because it is difficult; it becomes more deliberate when it can answer three questions. What is the target? What counts as a successful attempt? What changes if the same error keeps appearing? If those answers are missing, the drill may still condition effort, but it is not clearly training the intended skill.
Coaching changes the information available to the athlete
Individual discipline matters, but the setting of practice changes what the athlete can perceive. Some errors are hard to feel from the inside. A player may believe they are holding shape defensively, keeping the same release point, or reading the correct cue, while an outside observer sees something different. Feedback closes that gap.
In a sample of 388 elite youth soccer players, grit predicted expertise level directly and indirectly, grittier players accumulated more coach-led team practice, coach-led team practice predicted skill level, self-led training and peer play did not predict skill level in the reported model, and a one-standard-deviation change in grit was associated with at least a one-third-standard-deviation improvement in skill (Larkin, 2022). The useful interpretation is not that solo work has no value or that coaching automatically produces skill. It is that, in this specific setting, the practice most associated with skill was the practice richest in structure, standards, and external correction.
That finding helps separate two ideas athletes often conflate: effort volume and information quality. Self-led work can be productive when the athlete has a clear target and a way to evaluate attempts. Peer play can build exposure, creativity, and competitive rhythm. But when the goal is to change a specific skill, the environment needs to supply accurate information about performance. Coach-led settings often make that easier because the target, difficulty, and feedback can be adjusted in real time.
Motivation still matters, but not as a moral score. The same soccer study suggests that persistence may help an athlete accumulate more structured practice while also relating to skill beyond accumulated practice exposure (Larkin, 2022). For a disciplined adult, the takeaway is to design practice so persistence has somewhere useful to go. Grit without feedback can become repeated frustration. Feedback without enough follow-through can remain information that never gets integrated.
Other skill fields show the same loop, with an important caution
Research outside sport is useful here because it shows the same learning architecture in different tasks: repeated attempts, feedback, targeted development, and reassessment. The caution is that teaching, nursing, and surgical simulation findings do not directly prove athletic outcomes. They do, however, clarify what structured practice tends to include when it is designed for skill acquisition.
Science teacher candidates who taught the same lesson three times to avatars over three weeks, received feedback after each teaching experience, and completed asynchronous skill-development modules showed positive impacts on questioning and discussion competencies across self-reports, interviews, and scorer ratings (Pecore, 2022). The mechanism worth translating is not the teaching task itself; it is the structure. The candidates repeated a comparable performance challenge, received feedback after each exposure, worked through targeted modules, and returned to the task. That is a tighter learning loop than simply “getting more experience.”
The same pattern appears in communication-skill simulation, but with a reminder that progress can be uneven. In a multi-site study of 51 prelicensure nursing students, mean handoff communication scores on a 0-to-10 I-SBAR scale increased from 6.24 at baseline to 8.34 at T1, declined to 6.96 at T2, and increased to 7.82 at final assessment, with significant improvement from baseline to final assessment at p < 0.001 (Vanderzwan, 2025). For athletes, the important lesson is the shape of the curve. A skill can improve, wobble, and improve again. One strong session does not prove the skill is stable, and one weaker session does not mean the process failed.
This is why reassessment matters. If a basketball player has one sharp shooting day after a technical cue, the question is whether the release holds when fatigue, speed, spacing, or decision pressure changes. If a runner feels smoother after a cadence focus, the question is whether that change remains visible when terrain or pace shifts. The practice loop should reveal whether the skill is stabilizing across conditions, not just whether it appeared once.
Checking boxes is not the same as designing practice
Deliberate practice is sometimes reduced to a checklist: feedback, repetition, challenge, reflection. Those elements matter, but implementation quality changes their value.
A systematic review of 22 simulation-based surgical training studies found that most incorporated feedback and repetition, commonly lacked structured assessments of learner motivation and individualized task design, generally reported improvements in surgical skills after deliberate-practice-informed simulation training, and showed an inconsistent correlation between the number of deliberate-practice elements used and learning outcomes (Wickramasinghe, 2025). The implication is precise: adding more “deliberate practice features” does not automatically make a practice environment better. The task has to match the learner, the target skill, and the performance standard.
That point is highly relevant for athletes and active adults. A drill can look advanced and still miss the skill that needs work. A complex agility setup may challenge conditioning more than decision-making. A shooting drill may create volume without testing shot selection. A communication drill may reward loudness without improving timing or clarity. The useful filter is whether the task creates the same information demand as the skill you care about.
A simple practice audit can help without turning training into a rigid protocol:
- What is the specific skill target for this block?
- What does a successful attempt look or sound like?
- How will feedback be collected: coach input, video, score, evaluator rating, or a clear performance cue?
- What will be repeated, and what will change if the same error keeps appearing?
- Is the task difficult enough to expose the skill but clear enough to evaluate?
- Did the athlete reflect on what changed, what stayed inconsistent, and what needs the next adjustment?
- Is the structure sustainable enough to repeat over time without depending only on motivation?
The most non-obvious move is often to reduce the drill before making it harder. If the athlete cannot identify the target or interpret feedback, adding speed, fatigue, or complexity may hide the learning signal. Once the target is visible and the correction is understood, difficulty can be adjusted more intelligently.
Outside feedback can be useful when errors repeat, progress stalls, or the athlete cannot clearly evaluate the skill alone. A coach or qualified professional may help define the target, adjust task difficulty, and provide clearer standards. If pain, symptoms, or medical concerns are present, practice design should not be treated as a substitute for individual evaluation from a qualified professional.
Better practice is not softer than hard work. It is harder in a different way. It asks the athlete to be specific, to face feedback, and to change the next attempt instead of defending the last one. Over time, that structure can make skill development less dependent on mood and more dependent on a repeatable learning process.
